Sustainability policy

Munthe's Hildasholm is one of Dalarna's finest visitor attractions, as well as a listed building, whose purpose is to preserve the historical flavour of the cultural environment and offer accessibility for visitors. In addition to the house, there is a surprising and fantastic garden, whose garden rooms are laid out according to Arts & Crafts' ideal plan. This was partly created by Hilda Pennington Mellor, wife of Axel Munthe and mother of Malcolm and Peter Munthe. The house was their summer home for many years from the early nineteenth century.

Respecting the characteristics and conditions of our destination requires a long-term approach to sustainability.

Purpose & objectives

Munthe's Hildasholm is one of Dalarna's finest visitor destinations, as well as a listed building, whose purpose is to preserve the historic flavour of the cultural environment and provide access for visitors. In addition to the house there are a surprising and stunning garden, whose garden rooms are laid out according to the Arts & Crafts ideal plan.

This is partly created by Hilda Pennington Mellor, wife of Axel Munthe and mother of Malcolm and Peter Munthe. The house was their summer home for many years from the beginning of the nineteenth century.

In order to respect the specific characteristics and conditions of our destination, a long-term sustainability mindset.

Definition

Economic sustainability means for us to have a well thought-out and transparent budget that allows for a slow increase in visitor numbers primarily through a widening of our opening hours, as well as increased accessibility of the Great House. The financial sustainability of the Foundation is also a prerequisite for the preservation of the monument and its general accessibility to visitors. 

Environmental sustainability means that the existing management plans for the park, garden and buildings that are in place are well thought out, long term and well anchored in the protection and provisions of the monument declaration. They are reviewed annually and updated as necessary. We endeavour to manage resources, materials and energy efficiently. 

Social sustainability means for us to be a destination that puts the visitor (guest) in focus, and that we offer good working conditions for all staff. 

Siljan geopark. Hildasholm supports Siljans Geopark as an ambassador with knowledge dissemination. The Geopark explains the connection between geology and natural and cultural heritage.

Commitment

In order to create long-term sustainability, the guidelines of this policy must be kept up to date in both Hildasholm's board and management team meetings.
